KCC Entertainment Design, a leading creator of themed environments, is celebrating the opening of The Smurfs Indoor Theme Park near Shanghai, China.

KCC Entertainment Design is proud to announce that the world’s biggest Smurfs Indoor Theme Park is now welcoming visitors, following an opening ceremony attended by Chinese and Belgian government officials.

The 8,000 square metre park is part of mixed-use development, alongside the Wonderland Intercontinental Hotel, residential properties and retail offerings. The leisure destination has been developed by Shimao Property Holdings Ltd, in collaboration with IMPS, owner of the Smurfs IP.

Bringing the Smurfs to life

KCC Entertainment Design was behind the concept and schematic design of the new attraction.

“The Belgium-based KCC team immersed completely into the world and DNA of the Smurfs and analysed the site, the market, the budget and other project related constraints,” says KCC Entertainment Design CEO Yannick Maes. “Through this typical KCC approach, an incredible Smurfy story was developed which fits the building and budget perfectly!”

Inside, guests enter through a maze where they discover the secret world of the much-loved blue characters. The three themed zones are scaled to make visitors feel smurf-sized and to immerse them in the land of the Smurfs.

The first of these three zones is the 2,500 square metre fantasy forest which offers several fun attractions and is the gateway to two other zones: first the 3,000 square metre wonderful Smurfs village home where guests can meet their favourite characters and explore their homes, as well as having fun on rides.

The other zone is the 2,500 square metre Gargamel’s house, home to the Smurfs arch-nemesis where visitors are challenges to rescue captured Smurfs and escape Gargamel’s clutches.

Sustainability

KCC Entertainment Design has also integrated the United Nations and UNICEF’s 17 sustainable goals, a campaign supported by the Smurfs, throughout the park. Guests are encouraged to join ‘Team Smurfs’ in their mission to create a greener and more sustainable world.

The park features 29 Smurf themed attractions, for example, the Smurfs Berry Factory roller coaster, Gargamel’s interactive ghost house and the Swamp Adventure 3D Dark ride.

“Unfortunately, due to the current COVID-19 situation, we could not fly ourselves to celebrate and enjoy this great day, but our KCC China team is present and keeps making us extremely jealous with amazing pictures and fantastic videos!” says Maes.

KCC Entertainment Design, IMPS and Shimao plan to continue working in partnership on the design and development of a 10, 000 square metre Smurfs outdoor theme park, located next to the indoor park.

“We also look forward to another great opening this year in China with the Chocolate Kingdom Theme Park in Guangzhou!” adds Maes.

KCC Entertainment Design has worked on several other attractions in China, including the Wanda Nanjing Indoor Theme Park and more.
