Atlantis Aquaventure is committed to “inclusivity and accessibility“.

Dubai’s Atlantis Aquaventure has become the first water park in the Middle East to earn a Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation.

As well as completing a training and review process to better understand and help autistic and other neurodivergent guests, Aquaventure has updated its signage to include sensory ratings for 24 attractions.

This includes information on the waterslide or attraction’s noise level, lighting and water temperature. In addition, the team has created two quiet zones for any guests who feel overwhelmed during a visit.

Kelly Timmins, Atlantis Dubai’s director of marine animal operations and sustainability, said the CAC designation “emphasises our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility“.

“We look forward to welcoming all guests to Atlantis Aquaventure for an enjoyable and memorable experience,” Timmins said.

“Everyone deserves to make memories and feel welcomed when they travel to new destinations,” added Myron Pincomb, the board chairman for the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, which awards the CAC certifications.

“Working with industry leaders like Atlantis Aquaventure will make a huge impact in the region and around the globe to create more inclusive spaces.”

Aquaventure is home to more than 105 slides, rides and attractions. The 22.5-hectare water park boasts several record-breaking slides, including the world’s tallest waterslide.

Sensory ratings for attractions

Many attraction operators have gone above and beyond when it comes to providing a facility for everyone, including visitors in wheelchairs, those with sight or hearing impairments, and neurodivergent guests.

In 2022, Legoland Florida became the first theme park resort to earn a CAC designation. This includes the resort’s hotels, as well as the Legoland theme park, Legoland Water Park and Peppa Pig Theme Park.

The latter features accessible ride vehicles and attractions. Last August, Ocean Park’s Water World became the first water park in Asia to become a Certified Autism Center.
