Pulau Jerejak, an island on the east coast of Penang, Malaysia, could be turned into a theme park by developers.
There are reports that the southern portion of the island could be transformed into a theme park as part of a larger master plan to redevelop Jerejak Island, which formerly housed a prison.
The master plan includes a bridge from the Bayan Mutiara area. It has been approved after being submitted to the state government by Tropical Island Resort Sdn Bhd in August 2016. Local authorities have not yet received a request for planning permission for a theme park.
An earlier report said that developers would build 1,200 residential units, a theme park, a marina, four- and five-star hotels and a cycling track.
In summer this year, the Penang government announced it was planning to develop a water theme park in Batu Kawan, Malaysia, in order to attract investors to the town.
In 2013, the Penang Development Corp (PDC) announced a request for proposal (RFP) to build an international theme park project.
