Nostalgia and wonder are focuses of Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of the Imagination, the venue’s latest exhibition

Elmwood Projects Ltd., a fit-out specialist within the museum and commercial sectors, utilised its in-house design capabilities and bespoke joinery workshop for a new exhibition at the Science Museum.

The exhibition’s venue is an award-winning London tourist site that draws over 3 million people each year. The Museum houses approximately 15,000 display pieces and offers visitors an extraordinary experience that highlights scientific success and promise.

The Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of the Imagination exhibition seeks to take visitors on a dynamic and interactive journey across the universe by utilising over 70 actual pieces from well-known film, television, and book franchises, as well as artwork and interactives.

Elmwood Projects Ltd. were hired as the main contractor to design, fabricate, and install setworks, partition walls, and display cases with integrated AV and Interactives. The team also managed the design and installation of electrical power and lighting, graphics, and decorative works over a nine-week programme.

Navigating obstacles

Elmwood Project Ltd.’s design team had to overcome numerous major hurdles, including the requirement that all setworks and displays be conceived and built in such a way that they could be disassembled and transported to other museums across the world. This requirement complicated design activities by requiring that all materials and equipment specified meet the criteria of other jurisdictions, including the US.

To achieve the complex and diversified project needs, the firm relied on its established supply chain connections with key vendors. The project programme also provided obstacles due to the project’s size and complexity.

The Science Museum exhibition has received rave reviews from mainstream media outlets, with The Guardian calling it “a refreshingly optimistic antidote to apocalyptic dread” and The Telegraph sharing that “It’s that optimistic, transporting magic of sci-fi that makes this enlightening show so much fun”.

Key delivery partners for the project included Aivaf for models/interactives, FusionLX for electrical/lighting, Glasshaus for display & showcases and graphics by Service Graphics.

Exhibition now open

Science Fiction: Voyage to the Edge of the Imagination is now open at Science Museum, London until 4 May 2023. Tickets are £20 and can be booked in advance.

Elmwood Projects Ltd. has also recently been involved with a major project at Dynamic Earth, Scotland, reinventing permanent exhibition space at the Edinburgh attraction.
