Versatile visuals are wowing audiences in China

Christie, the global visual and audio technology company, has confirmed that its high-performance 3DLP and 1DLP laser projectors are being utilised by a new nighttime tourist attraction in Zhangjiajie, a prefecture-level city in Hunan Province, China.

“Jiuge-Shangui”, a mesmerising grand extravaganza, is based on tales from the “Chu Ci” poetry collection by famed Chinese poet Qu Yuan. It also incorporates the cultural traditions of the local Tujia and Miao ethnic groups and the spectacular natural splendour of Zhangjiajie.

Up to a dozen Crimson WU31, DWU2022-HS, and DWU1612-HS laser projectors were provided and installed by Christie’s dependable partner, Jianye Display, to illuminate live performances held throughout the scenic area extending over 5 square kilometres (1.9 square miles).

A post-pandemic spectacle

“The “Jiuge-Shangui” nighttime spectacular is the first of its kind in the world and features majestic scenes set in natural landscapes such as mountains, forests, sinkholes, and karst caves,” says Jianye Display technical director for southern China, Zhongliang Li.

“As the first large-scale show in the post-pandemic era, we have pulled out all the stops to ensure that this massive outdoor spectacle is a great success. The Christie Crimson and HS Series laser projectors, with their rugged design, impeccable performance and dependability, are our preferred choice for this major endeavour.”

The projectors produce vivid visuals at many performance venues, including the enormous Hibiscus tree and enchanting forest, which are connected by plank pathways and housed in weatherproof shelters overlooking the stage areas.

Li adds: “These sites represent the harmonious coexistence of nature and life depicted in ancient poetry, and they are vividly brought to life using a variety of advanced technologies including 3D projections, lighting, holography and water effects to create a stunning multisensorial experience that accentuates the timeless beauty of the Jiuge-Shangui scenic area.”

Part of the story

Visitors are immediately taken to a magical dreamland as soon as they enter the scenic area, where they encounter imaginative and enigmatic set pieces that change appearances as the plot develops. In addition to a group of live actors, many breathtaking images on various surfaces enhance the storytelling process and leave an enduring effect on anybody who sees them, including ancient trilobites, fireflies, magical creatures, and flowers.

Christie, senior director of sales for China, Enterprise, April Qin says: “The ‘Jiuge-Shangui’ nighttime spectacular is a remarkable cultural tourism project that has elevated Zhangjiajie’s status as an exceptional and unforgettable destination, showcasing impressive scenes set in natural landscapes.

“As a key partner in this groundbreaking project, Jianye Display supplied our laser projectors that are ideal for demanding, high-usage outdoor applications. We’re thrilled to have played a role in bringing this project to fruition and look forward to delivering more unique and exciting projects in China.”

The Crimson WU31 is a go-to choice for demanding, significant venue events and applications, with features including Christie BoldColor Technology for increased colour performance and ultra-fast Christie TruLife electronics.

The Christie HS Series 1DLP laser projectors provide comprehensive functionality and long-lasting laser illumination to meet the requirements of a variety of applications.
