Therme Group is partnering with the University of Surrey to create new digital platforms for the tourism industry to measure and reduce its carbon footprint.
These digital platforms will allow businesses to quickly calculate their carbon emissions and find solutions to reduce their impact.
Per a release, the emissions produced by the travel and tourism industry contribute from 8 percent to 11 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, amounting to approximately 3.9 to 5.4 billion tonnes of CO2.

Land-based transport and buildings in the sector are already taking steps to transition to cleaner energy sources, but other areas of the industry are struggling to reduce their carbon footprint.
As part of the collaboration, the first carbon calculator to measure the entire footprint of organisations in the visitor economy will be produced.
“In the University of Surrey, we have found a partner who shares our understanding of sustainability as a challenge that can only be addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective,” said Therme Group chairman and CEO, Robert Hanea.
“An astonishing intellectual breadth, combined with a culture of collegiality, respect and curiosity, is what will make this partnership a huge success, helping to create the green economy of the future.”

“Our new partnership with Therme is yet another example of Surrey’s commitment to use research and innovation to drive positive change and contribute to the UN’s sustainability development goals,” said Professor Max Lu, the university’s president and vice-chancellor.
“If we can help the hospitality and tourism sector take a step forward in helping to reduce carbon emissions, then this partnership will have been a tremendous success.”
Earlier this month, Therme revealed plans for a new wellbeing resort in Washington, DC. The company is also developing new sites in Canada, Manchester, Glasgow, South Korea and Frankfurt.
