Redesign includes more parkland and natural spaces for the West Island of Ontario Place

Therme Group has released a “newly evolved” design for Therme Canada, a C$350 million water park and wellbeing resort at Toronto’s Ontario Place.

The redesign includes more parkland and natural spaces for the West Island of Ontario Place, set to become one of the largest public gathering spaces on Toronto’s western waterfront.

The new proposals address concerns from residents after public meetings and community engagement and include areas designed with input from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

“The design that we revealed today delivers the same great water park and wellbeing attractions, but thanks to feedback, it has even more open parkland, more natural spaces, more public trails, and more places for people to gather,” said Robert Hanea, CEO and chairman of Therme Group.

“After this revitalization, there will be more public space than currently exists on the West Island, and we are proud to advance a project that responds so meaningfully to the feedback we have heard so far.”

Per a press release, the redesign “recognises the important role of Indigenous heritage on the site”. As above, the new areas were designed in collaboration with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

Additionally, the volume of the Therme building has been reduced by 25 percent, so instead of one large structure, the development will feature a campus-style layout.

The redesign also includes four additional acres of public space – including parks, rooftop trails and gardens – to bring the total to nearly 16 acres.

“We are very pleased with the unveiling of the design for the West Island at Ontario Place,” said Stacey LaForme, chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

“Our deep and ongoing partnership with Therme continues to bring us closer to our shared vision for cultural revitalisation and place-keeping.

“We look forward to our continued collaboration and to advancing the design of the West Island in a meaningful and culturally significant way.”

Highlights at Therme Canada will include a new public beach, botanical gardens, and a water park with pools and waterslides.
