Integrated Systems Europe (ISE), the largest AV and systems integration show in the world, has announced that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will deliver the opening keynote address at ISE 2024.
The trailblazing filmmaker will speak about the significance of narrative and how technology is changing people’s lives at the expo, which is taking place in Barcelona from 30 January to 2 February 2024.
Power of storytelling
Obaid-Chinoy is the first filmmaker from Pakistan to win an Oscar, and the first female film director to have won two Oscars by the age of 37. She is best known for her Academy Award-winning documentary shorts Saving Face and A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness.
She has also won four Emmy Awards, a Knight International Journalism Award, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian honour, and was recognised by TIME magazine in its list of the 100 most influential people on earth.
The audiovisual sector is integrally tied to storytelling, and it informs every aspect of ISE 2024. Almost every component of the audiovisual landscape is driven by narrative, from immersive visitor experiences to inspirational presentations by thought leaders, and captivating advertising campaigns displayed on digital signage.
Obaid-Chinoy’s work epitomises the power of narrative to inspire, enlighten, and shape the future of audiovisual innovation and its different markets, and her selection as the opening keynote for ISE 2024 demonstrates the importance of storytelling to the AV industry.
Mike Blackman, managing director, Integrated Systems Events, comments: “We are thrilled to have Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy give our Opening Keynote at ISE 2024; she promises to be a compelling, thought-provoking speaker. As an innovator, trailblazer and advocate for positive change, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has made a great impact in her industry and in wider society.”
Societal impact
Obaid-Chinoy has used her creativity to impact changes in society throughout her career. She was invited to meet with Pakistan’s prime minister in 2016, following her Oscar win for A Girl In The River: The Price Of Forgiveness, which addressed the contentious issue of honour killings. The encounter aided the passage of the country’s long-stalled honour killing bill.
She directed two significant episodes of the highly regarded Marvel series Ms. Marvel in 2022 after transitioning into narrative filmmaking. The series followed Pakistani-American teen Kamala Khan, the MCU’s first Muslim character. Obaid-Chinoy ‘s episodes were recognised in the New York Times’ yearly list of the Best Episodes of TV.
Obaid-Chinoy was announced as the first woman to direct a Star Wars movie earlier this year. Daisy Ridley will star in the live-action film, which is set for release in 2026.
Obaid-Chinoy will deliver the ISE 2024 opening keynote on Tuesday 30 January. More details on the ISE 2024 Conference Programme and 20th Anniversary Celebration events will be announced soon.
Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) opened registrations for ISE 2024, the world’s leading expo in AV and systems integration, earlier this month. Industry experts from around the world, AV technology users, and innovators can now register to attend.
