Nickelodeon has created a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles VR Experience for San Diego’s Comic-Con.

Attendees at San Diego’s Comic-Con International will be able to interact with the Turtles in a live VR experience.

VR is increasingly being used to bring IPs to life in location based entertainment (LBE). Now Nickelodeon is showcasing VR versions of the perennially popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at Comic-Con.

The display at Nickelodeon’s 1,800 square foot booth will include a showcase for their new animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Live” experience employs VR to create an immersive experience. Mikey and Donnie will interact in live time with attendees.

The unique experience is the brain child of Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab which spearheads R&D around VR, MR (mixed reality), AR and AI.

Their first move into social VR, Slime Zone, debuted around the world at IMAX VR centres earlier in the year. Nickelodeon has recently announced that it has invested in Dreamscape Immersive, the location-based VR start-up responsible for Alien Zoo. The two companies are committed to producing an experience using Nickelodeon’s IP for family entertainment.

Bringing VR into LBE

Many other companies are seeking to expand location-based entertainment, transforming iconic IPs into real world experiences. It seems likely that VR may well be a key component in bridging the gap. As Blooloop reported in March, Ubisoft and Triotech unveiled their immersive VR Rabbids maze at IAAPA. The experience combines the emotional connection of the IP with interactivity, immersion and high quality tech.

Ubisoft and Triotech are also giving Assassin’s Creed the VR treatment. The iconic IP is the subject of a VR maze that gives the experience of exploring an ancient Egyptian temple.

VR could potentially bring in a major new audience to FECs and amusement parks as gamers get to experience a new facet of their favourite IPs without having to invest in VR equipment at home.
