Alton Towers to limit ride access pass for people with ADHD, anxiety

Merlin will trial the new approach this February

UK theme park Alton Towers will limit ride access passes for people with conditions like ADHD, anxiety and autism during a trial over the February half-term break.

Alton Towers' operator Merlin Entertainments offers a ride access pass to "guests who are unable to stand in standard ride queues due to a disability or medical condition".

Due to growing demand for ride access passes, the trial will also be implemented at Chessington World of Adventures and Legoland Windsor.

Via the BBC, Merlin said the number of people requesting the pass has been increasing, with disabled visitors reporting that the system "isn't working for them" and that "queue times for these guests have increased".

Rob Smith, chief operating officer at Merlin Entertainments, said the suggested eligibility changes had "raised concerns for some guests".

"Our commitment to supporting neurodiverse guests and those with mental health needs remains," he said.

"We are listening carefully to this feedback and are committed to keeping this approach under review ahead of our main season openings in March.

"We remain deeply committed to creating inclusive experiences and ensuring all guests feel supported when visiting our attractions."

Currently, visitors who have a "difficulty with crowds" qualify for the ride access pass.

During the half-term trial, however, only guests with "difficulty standing," "level access" or "urgent toilet needs" will qualify.

This means that people who have a "difficulty with crowds" will have to queue for rides and attractions as normal. They will be able to visit guest services for personalised support instead.

Henry Shelford, chief executive of the ADHD UK charity, said "a group of people will be excluded because of this lack of accommodation".

The new approach will be reviewed by Merlin after the trial and before Alton Towers opens fully in March for the 2026 season.
