Little Big City Beijing opening this summer

Merlin Entertainments will open its first Little Big City attraction in China this summer. It will be located near Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the attraction on Wednesday. Little Big City Beijing will feature miniature replicas of iconic Asian landmarks, such as the Forbidden City, Great Wall and Temple of Heaven. It will also include more than 6,000 mannequin residents.

Visitors will find an immersive experience that explores the history of China and makes use of cutting-edge hologram and projection mapping technologies.

Little Big City Beijing will be the first interactive miniature experience venue in Asia, and the second one in the world, alongside the original Little Big City in Berlin.

“China is a market that is full of vigour, vitality and potential,” Ben Sweet, new opening director for Asia Pacific at Merlin Entertainments, told China.org.cn. “With the recent speedy development of the China market, the consumption pattern of Chinese customers is going through significant restructuring and upgrading.”

The design and build of Little Big City Beijing has been a joint effort between teams in the UK and China. The Chinese team focused on producing the miniature models while the UK made the model designs and special effects.

Darren Ward, models delivery manager for Merlin Magic Making, told China.org.cn: “It was very important that we built each element with great care and consideration of the historical and cultural context. The English team essentially brings in experience on the designs and technology that have been briefed by the Chinese team.”
