Cosm, a global technology company that builds end-to-end solutions for immersive experiences, has announced a new partnership with Chris Homes, DJ, artist and founder of Fascinated by Everything, to release The Journey Within, an immersive experience designed for Cosm’s 87-foot diameter 12K LED domes.
The Journey Within, a Cosm Studios Original, is a meticulously crafted multi-sensory mixtape that combines music by David Bowie, Radiohead, Joseph Campbell, Matthew Dear, and more with imagery created using hand-built LED kaleidoscopes, laser sculptures, and video recordings of the world’s natural wonders, from the icebergs of Antarctica to the sandy beaches of Malibu and the pristine lakes of northern Minnesota. It is scheduled for release in spring 2024 at Cosm’s upcoming entertainment venues.
Holmes uses his decades-long experience DJing and remixing to create enchanting landscapes of light and colour that are meant to take audiences away from the rigours of everyday life and into a realm of wonder.
A multisensory adventure
A carefully chosen mixtape featuring musicians, authors, and revolutionary thinkers who have been influential in both Holmes’ professional and personal journeys, the experience leads viewers on a multisensory adventure. Holmes’ work depicts a beautiful and musical journey, drawing inspiration from the works of artists such as Yayoi Kusama, James Turrell, and Dan Flavin, as well as Thomas Wilfred‘s Clavilux and Laserium laser light shows.
“This project could find no better home than Cosm, which provides the highest possible resolution for immersive visuals and sound,” says Holmes. “This work is designed to turn Cosm into a cathedral of light, color, and sound, bringing a community together for an entirely new social experience that transcends the constant worry and fear brought on by so many screens in our lives.”
Every kaleidoscope that was used to create the experience was intended to provide a captivating display of colours, patterns, and endless possibilities on a media that had never been seen before, recontextualizing the natural world. The Journey Within is a shared experience that will illuminate audiences’ interconnectedness while arousing a profound sense of awe and amazement through the integration of light, sound, technology, artistry, and the natural beauties of Earth.
A growing community of talented creators
“We are proud to welcome Chris Holmes as the next artist to join Cosm’s growing community of talented creators,” says Neil Carty, VP, head of Cosm Studios at Cosm.
“Together, we are enabling audiences to experience art in an entirely new way, beyond what is typically only experienced at music and art festivals, by bringing works like The Journey Within at the scale and magnitude of immersion that only Cosm can deliver. Chris’ extraordinary use of psychedelic kaleidoscopes, stunning landscapes, and iconic music tracks will transport and mesmerize you through an awe-inspiring journey, and we look forward to bringing his work to life in ‘Shared Reality’ at our forthcoming venues.”
Working with an interdisciplinary community of some of the most talented artists, filmmakers, technologists, and experience designers, Cosm Studios, the company’s content and storytelling arm, fosters the art of fulldome filmmaking and the immersive creator ecosystem while pushing the frontiers of immersive storytelling and design.
Holmes is the third artist to join Cosm Studios’ Creator Program alongside award-winning new media artist Nancy Baker Cahill, who announced SEEK with Cosm earlier this year, and filmmaker and director Guy Reid, co-founder of recently announced partner Planetary Collective.
Cosm’s venues create an environment that combines the energy of the crowd with upgraded food and beverage options, specialised merchandising, and cutting-edge visuals supported by the company’s best-in-class technology to create memorable fan experiences. Programming at its locations will feature live sports events like NBA games and UFC fights, in addition to other experiential material, entertainment, and art experiences like Holmes’ The Journey Within and Baker Cahill’s SEEK.
Cosm is currently building its first venue in Los Angeles and its second venue in Dallas. The company also has plans to open more locations in key markets in the future.
