Dataton, a global leader in audio-visual software for visitor experiences, provided its WATCHOUT show composer software for a new immersive art installation at San Miguel Church in Cuenca, Spain, called Luz Cuenca. The digital art experience was produced by Ibercover Studio. It teams Dataton WATCHOUT with 20 projectors to map content on the church’s walls, floors, vaulted ceilings, nooks and crannies.

After undergoing substantial restorations funded by the Cuenca Consortium and the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha, the historic San Miguel Church in the centre of Cuenca recently reopened. Not only was the reopening itself a reason for celebration, but it also heralded the start of the spectacular Luz Cuenca light and sound display. Animated image projections on the church’s interior showcase Cuenca’s rich cultural heritage.

In January 2024, Luz Cuenca was formally inaugurated by Emiliano García-Page, the president of Castilla-La Mancha, who also emphasised the significance of the event for the city.

Choosing the right technology

Ibercover Studio chose Fluge Audiovisuales to provide the audiovisual equipment, including 20 Barco G60-W7 projectors running under 4 WATCHOUT multi-display systems and Pixilab Blocks for control. The sound installation uses 20 KV2 Audio speakers positioned around the space for maximum impact.

Fernando Carabias of Fluge Audiovisuales was in charge of the technical design of projection, adjustments, programming, scanning and 3D positioning with the collaboration and advice of Lluís Badosa and Miguel Ángel Yunta from INWO SMART AV, the Dataton premium partner for Spain. The content design is by Manuel Horischnik from Ibercover Studio.

In a little over a month, the site has already established itself as a popular tourist destination and cultural hub. “The Ibercover Studio and Fluge Audiovisuals teams have created an amazing transformation,” says Badosa. “Stepping into the church, now restored to its former glory, and into the world of “Luz Cuenca” is a truly fantastic experience!”

Dataton recently showcased a major new release of its WATCHOUT show composer software at ISE 2024 in Barcelona.
