Warner Bros has applied for a patent facilitating a mixed reality movie experience. The filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office details technology lending itself to both augmented and virtual reality.
The application filed on April 13th details a system to be used with headsets either in cinemas or the home. Viewers might, for example, be able to see images that extend out of the physical screen. Audiences members could also experience the same movie – from the same perspective – whilst sitting in different parts of the same room.
Excitement behind mixed reality at the movies appears to be growing, writes Jake Peterson. There is a lot of potential from adding another layer to a medium whose primary delivery system hasn’t changed all that much in the last century.
