Alton Towers wants to expand its Enchanted Village accommodation with 102 new glamping-style pods.

A planning application on behalf of Alton Towers to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, seen by the Stoke Sentinel, details the plan for the wood frame pods to be situated to the north of the existing luxury woodland lodges.

The glamping pods would house up to four people with a double bed and two singles. Each pod would have electricity but no plumbing. Communal showers and toilets are included in the plans.

A statement submitted on behalf of Alton Towers by Manser Practice Architects and Designers, states: “The proposed phase two pods development will have a positive effect on the local visitor economy by extending the accommodation offer and encouraging visitors to stay at the park for longer.

“The development will create new employment opportunities and will contribute to the local economy through direct and indirect spending.

“The pods have a relatively small footprint compared with the existing lodges on the adjacent site. They will provide space to sleep, with basic small power, heating and a small window.

“The style has been chosen to complement the surrounding area and adjacent Enchanted Village development but provide a different style of accommodation to address the market demand for a more camping style accommodation.”

Alton Towers is getting ready to launch its latest attraction, the Wicker Man roller coaster. It is a wooden coaster that incorporates a six-storey high (17.55m) flaming wicker man. It is due to open this spring.
