Alton Towers has announced an opening date for Nemesis Reborn after an extensive transformation of the iconic roller coaster.

Nemesis Reborn will reopen to the public on 16 March. As part of the overhaul, Alton Towers has replaced the entire 250-tonne, 716-metre-long track, and redesigned the mythical beast that gives the ride its name.

In the updated ride experience, the beast’s eye – ringed by razor-sharp teeth – is brought to life through state-of-the-art audiovisual (AV) technology. Additionally, the new Nemesis features immersive elements.

New technology and immersive elements

To promote the launch of the new coaster, the park has shared images of a giant, glowing alien eye in Staffordshire’s so-called Cannock Chase UFO hotspot.

Per a press release, the Ministry of Defence has officially investigated dozens of reports of unexplained activity, including school children claiming to see an extraterrestrial figure with a lemon-shaped head.

Bianca Sammut, divisional director at Alton Towers, said: “Throughout its first 30 years, Nemesis captured the imagination of millions of thrillseekers from around the globe. It’s been an astonishing privilege to bring this truly iconic ride into the 21st century.

“We’ve retained its essential DNA, while harnessing the most state-of-the-art technology and immersive storytelling techniques to ensure it will retain its status as a truly unrivalled roller coaster experience for a whole new generation.”

Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), Nemesis opened in 1994 as Europe’s first inverted coaster. It offers a g-force of 3.5 and top speeds of 50 mph.

The £10 million ride closed in November 2022 ahead of the biggest overhaul in its 30-year history. Alton Towers started rebuilding Nemesis in April 2023.

In more news, Alton Towers has submitted a planning application for a new attraction dubbed ‘Project Ocean’ in its Forbidden Valley area, which also houses Nemesis.
