Alton Towers has submitted a planning application for a new attraction in its Forbidden Valley area, which also houses the iconic Nemesis coaster.
The new feature will replace the parks’ existing Funk n Fly ride if the plans are approved by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council. However, the full details are being kept under wraps.
The theme park‘s proposed 18-metre-high attraction, dubbed ‘Project Ocean’, will sit on top of a concrete structure.
A statement submitted as part of the planning application said (via Stoke-on-Trent Live): “The objective has been to provide a return to a more fixed attraction to aid the dwell time and attraction availability in the Forbidden Valley area of the park.
‘Project Ocean’ plans submitted
“With the reopening of the popular ride Nemesis alongside existing attractions Sub-Terra, Blade and Galactica, it is believed guest numbers will increase in this area and a further attraction will aid in both dwell time, ride availability and keeping the area fresh.”
The park’s revamped Nemesis coaster is reopening as Nemesis Reborn this spring, following the biggest overhaul in its 30-year history.
As part of the ride’s transformation, the entire 250-tonne, 716-metre-long track has been replaced. In addition, Alton Towers has redesigned its mythical Nemesis beast.

“Nemesis is utterly cherished by generations of thrillseekers,” said Bianca Sammut, Alton Towers’ divisional director. “As Europe’s first inverted rollercoaster it occupies a special place in the heart for so many.”
Sammut added, “This year fans will be able to experience the stand-out thrills of Nemesis Reborn for themselves. We’re keeping tight-lipped about the exact date of its return for now, but we can assure you… the wait will be worth it.”
Alton Towers’ new indoor attraction, named ‘Project Horizon’, was given the green light last year. The park is keeping these details under wraps too.
