Amusement Parks: The Flambards Experience – a Potted History

The Flambards Experience is a family-owned amusement park situated on the outskirts of Helston in Cornwall.  The amusement park was originally founded by Lt. Cmdr. Douglas Kingsford Hale along with his wife Audrey back in 1976 and called the ‘Cornwall Aircraft Park’ and his son James still owns the amusement park today.

It is aptly called ‘The Flambards Experience’ as it has much more to offer than some of the other more traditional amusement parks which places thrill seeking rides as their sole focus.  It certainly boasts several of those kinds of rides too with the Hornet Rollercoaster, the Rocking Tugboat and the Carousel just three of the most popular rides at the amusement park.

However, it is an amusement park which also prides itself in hosting some fantastic exhibitions such as Britain in the Blitz which recreates what it must have been like to live in war torn Britain during the Second World War. This is an interactive experience where you can smell the burning, hear the sirens wailing and walk through the bomb strewn streets. Another popular exhibition at the amusement park allows you to sample what life was like in a Victorian village.

Ferdi’s Funland – named after the amusement park’s mascot, ‘Ferdi Flambards’ is the place for the younger children’s rides at the amusement park. As well as the Pirate Ship, you can take a ride on the Human Cannonball or dodge the water spray on Shiver Me Timbers. There are also the Cool Zone and the Tots Zone where children can play safely whilst the adults can relax and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

The amusement park also boasts the Really Wild Experience in Mark’s Ark where you can get up close with pythons, owls, lizards and hawks that swoop down just above your head.

The amusement park also features special guests and announces other special exhibitions and events throughout the course of the season which starts in February and runs through until December. However, the amusement park is closed on certain days throughout the year so it’s important to check the website first.
