Aquarium Conservation Partnership (ACP), a coalition of aquariums and zoos for aquatic conservation, is raising awareness of the upcoming Global Plastics Treaty by encouraging people to sign a petition, in order to deliver a united message to the Biden administration in the US.
The petition calls for the administration to stand up and lead the negotiations toward a stronger global agreement, for a treaty that will reduce plastic at the source, address plastic pollution, and follow the science about the severity of the plastic crisis.
A call for strong leadership
“As we make, use, and discard plastic, it’s piling up all over our planet,” says ACP. “Plastic is found in almost every marine area on Earth — from our lakes, rivers, and streams, from polar sea ice to major ocean gyres to deep ocean trenches. The majority of sea turtle, marine mammal, and seabird species have been impacted by plastic. Not only does plastic pollution threaten the health of the planet, but also our own.
“We can solve this problem by reducing the amount of plastic produced at every stage of the plastic life cycle, but we need strong leadership from the international community – especially the United States.
“On April 23, leaders from 175 countries are coming together to negotiate a landmark agreement to create the world’s first-ever Global Plastic Treaty. Join us in calling on the U.S. government to be a global leader in this historic opportunity to end the plastic pollution crisis.”

ACP is comprised of 29 member organisations across 21 different states, each a trusted institution in the realm of science-backed conservation efforts. Through their work, they aim to inspire visitors and audiences online to take a positive stance for wildlife conservation.
The coalition’s mission is to safeguard ocean and freshwater ecosystems by aligning and supporting the conservation efforts of aquariums across the US, for greater collective and individual impact.
