SSA Group, a best-in-class provider of integrated guest services, was recognised at Gifts & Decorative Accessories’ 72nd annual Retailer Excellence Awards for its work at Maryland Zoo. The firm won in the category of Store Design, thanks to its remodel of the Wild Things gift shop at the attraction in Baltimore, Maryland.
For this project, SSA Group’s goal was to create an overall vibe in the shop that was captivating and engaging, and that also evoked emotion with a connection to the zoo and the surrounding Baltimore community. Combining the best parts of Baltimore with the unique attributes of Maryland Zoo, the remodelled shop allows for a well-rounded representation of the two as the guest’s final impression after their visit.
The Wild Things store features colourful art murals and custom ironwork, as well as a floor that is reminiscent of the water in the inner harbour and a ceiling that includes wood planking.
Unique creative elements
SSA Group came top in this category because of a few factors, including the store’s innovative and captivating technology features, as well as the level of creativity and thought that went into each design choice. The judges also noted the combination of unique elements that allow this design to stand out amongst any other zoo gift shop.
Announcing the results of the category at the awards event, the presenter said:
“Store design can enrich a customer’s buying experience, draw in new customers, and when done right can maximize sales. All three finalists for this category created an innovative, and captivating store design.”

Earlier this month, SSA Group announced that it is now operating the retail store at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, Massachusetts.
