Overview:
Blumenthal Arts is one of the largest not-for-profit arts organisations in the US, presenting live entertainment, cultural programming and immersive experiences across multiple venues in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Established in 1992, the organisation has developed a broad programme spanning Broadway productions, theatre, music, comedy, dance, festivals and experiential entertainment. It presents the largest Broadway season in the Carolinas and manages four theatres, hosting more than 1,000 events annually. Across its first 30 seasons, more than 8.3 million people attended events in its theatres.
Alongside presenting major touring productions, Blumenthal Arts invests in new work, artists and community programmes, positioning the arts as a driver for education, cultural participation and economic development in Charlotte.
Venues and cultural destinations
Elegant theater with blue seating and grand tiers - Belk Theater
Blumenthal Arts operates several performance and cultural spaces across Charlotte. The Blumenthal Arts Center, designed by architect César Pelli and opened in 1992, is home to the 2,118-seat Belk Theater, Booth Playhouse and Stage Door Theater.
The organisation also operates Knight Theater at Levine Center for the Arts, part of Charlotte's South Tryon cultural district.
Its portfolio has expanded beyond conventional theatre spaces with the development of Blume Studios, an immersive entertainment and creative destination at the former Charlotte Pipe and Foundry site in the city's Iron District. The reimagined industrial venue provides flexible spaces for large-scale installations, interactive entertainment, immersive theatre, virtual reality and locally produced events.
Immersive entertainment at Blume Studios
Blume Studios represents a growing focus on the intersection of arts, entertainment and technology for Blumenthal Arts.
The venue has hosted experiences including Space Explorers: THE INFINITE and MONOPOLY LIFESIZED: Travel Edition, alongside immersive theatre, interactive events and live entertainment.
In 2026, Blumenthal Arts expanded this activity through Blume Studios VR. Its programme has included Excurio's Horizon of Khufu: Journey in Ancient Egypt and Life Chronicles, co-produced by Excurio and the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, as well as Space Explorers: The ISS Experience from Felix & Paul Studios and PHI Studio.
The organisation has also continued to explore new formats at the venue. Clue: Murder on the Menu, an immersive dining and murder-mystery experience based on Hasbro's classic board game, is making its world premiere at Blume Studios in 2026.
This builds on Blumenthal Arts' earlier success with Immersive Van Gogh in Charlotte, which attracted more than 300,000 visitors.
Festivals, education and community
Vibrant night art installation lights up the cityscape.
Beyond its venues, Blumenthal Arts produces the Charlotte International Arts Festival, bringing together local and international artists through performances, installations and public events across the city.
Education and community engagement are also significant parts of the organisation's work. More than 150,000 students participate annually in initiatives ranging from internships and discounted access to performances to The Blumey Awards, which recognises achievement in high school musical theatre.
Through these activities, Blumenthal Arts combines traditional performing arts with festivals, immersive entertainment, artist development and educational programming, extending its role well beyond that of a conventional theatre operator.
