Zoo raising funds with Valentine's Day leech and rhino poo 'adoptions'

Barnacles are also up for 'adoption'

Naming a cockroach for Valentine’s Day has been a popular zoo tradition in recent years, but the Brevard Zoo in Florida is taking the concept further in 2026.

This year, the zoo's visitors and non-visitors can 'adopt' a leech, barnacle or rhinoceros poo in honour of their loved ones or old flames.

For a $5 donation, the Brevard Zoo will send adopters a special digital certificate and a social media graphic.

Every donation goes toward the Brevard Zoo's work in animal wellbeing, conservation and education.

Leeches and barnacles can be seen at the zoo's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center, and a leech adoption "might be a good move for those marking a particularly draining relationship", Brevard Zoo said.

At the rehabilitation centre, some sea turtle patients come in infested with marine leeches, but the zoo's veterinary team has also used medical leeches on its patients to improve circulation in flippers constricted by fishing lines.

"Can’t quite shake a loved one or old flame? Naming a barnacle for this relationship might offer some closure," it added.

Barnacles often crust the shells of sea turtles, burrowing in and weighing them down. They can be adopted by someone "wanting to honor (or dishonor) an extra clingy person in their life".

As for the poop, Brevard Zoo's three Southern white rhinos produce around 50 pounds of faeces each every day. Alongside other excrement from some of the zoo's herbivore residents, this is used to create compost for landscaping.

"For the freshly dumped or those with a turd in their life, a rhino poop adoption may be the ideal choice," the zoo said.

Another new concept for Valentine's Day 2026 is coming to Miami with Love Kills, an immersive haunted house by The Horrorland Miami.
