D-Tex Visual, a company that focuses on the development of AI sensors for safety and maintenance purposes within the theme park industry, has developed an entirely new approach to mechanical condition monitoring that offers both wired and wireless AI detection at the edge.
Soon to launch in the attractions industry, the new G2i sensor was originally engineered for a major quarry project.
By operating across different industries, D-Tex Visual is placed to transfer lessons learned and new ideas between sectors.

"D-Tex Visual can see the biggest potential with coaster cars and their assemblies, where the compact size and network capabilities can be deployed around the car. This will provide an unparalleled, granular view of the train forces and status of key fixings in numerous areas."

Faster, smaller, & networked
The G2i marks an evolution of Bolt-iT, the world’s first wireless, AI-at-the-edge sensor. A proven solution in the attractions sector, Bolt-iT was deployed on Falcon’s Flight at Qiddiya City, the tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster in the world.
Measuring just 50mm square by 17mm deep, the G2i is smaller than its counterpart but still boasts impressive AI capability within the sensor and patented multi-level detection.
However, a key point of difference is in its approach to data transfer.
While Bolt-iT relies on wireless connectivity, the G2i utilises a CAN network interface that gives the new sensor permanent power and high-speed communications. This not only allows faster sampling and processing speeds, but also facilitates the real-time transmission of the raw data to the G2 hub.
The hub can then provide a secondary layer of AI processing, which can be used either for second-stage validation or primarily to provide a holistic view of all the sensors, whether wired or wireless.
Cross-sector potential
For the quarry application with global leader Terex, the G2i and enhanced analysis software are working in the harshest of environments with unusual levels of vibration, dust, water, and extreme temperatures. D-Tex Visual's solution is currently being evaluated following initial data gathering on these huge machines.
Once complete, it will deliver an unprecedented level of analysis for this type of equipment and operating conditions, with results informing client performance data, preventative maintenance for the engineers and the company development programmes.

The hub's dual CAN interface enables data sharing with the main control system. D-Tex Visual designed all system components, including the PCB, mechanical parts, and AI software. Further features of the new G2i will be announced following final testing.
Just as applications for Bolt-iT have quickly expanded into other sectors, D-Tex Visual sees potential for the G2i to deliver significant benefits for the entertainment industry. Examples include where nuts, bolts and various assemblies require monitoring in confined spaces, such as on rollercoasters.
Once installed, the versatile system opens up numerous other possibilities, such as limit switch validation for harnesses, safety bars and other positional sensors.
And as the G2i operates on a non-contact basis, there are no physical switches, cams or points to fail. As such, it offers a true solid-state alternative.
