Maurer Rides, a leading designer and manufacturer of roller coasters and transport solutions, has brought its innovative Spike Coaster concept to Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia, with the park's Sea Stallion coaster.

Opened in December 2025, this new theme park is part of the extensive megaproject Qiddiya City, developed in the heart of the Tuwaiq Mountains, about 40 minutes from Riyadh.

As a collaboration between the Qiddiya Investment Company and Six Flags Entertainment, the park blends entertainment, sport, and culture across six themed areas.

Sea Stallion is situated in the "Discovery Springs" themed land, which explores the connection between desert and sea. The attraction captures the fusion of earth and water elements, taking visitors on a journey through a magical land filled with waterfalls, caves, and geysers.

The Möbius principle and interactive control

What makes the Sea Stallion unique is the combination of two innovative features. The first is its layout, which spans 510 meters on a single track and offers a duelling experience through a clever Möbius loop.

This design allows vehicles to race, overtake, and pass each other, creating thrill moments and parallel riding situations. This duelling concept was specifically implemented at the request of Six Flags Qiddiya City.

The second feature is the interactive speed control and boost button. Riders in the front seat can choose their speed and activate a boost to gain extra thrust, making each ride a personalised and competitive adventure.

Additionally, the coaster’s terrain integration seamlessly links it to the surrounding natural landscape and adjacent water attractions. The layout includes tunnel sequences that weave through the environment, incorporating the natural terrain and water features into the overall riding experience.

"The special challenge in designing the coaster was to develop a layout that incorporates the terrain and the adjacent water attraction, offering visitors an exciting and varied elemental experience," says Torsten Schmidt, designer at Maurer Rides

"The idea of realizing the dueling feature with just a single track via the Möbius loop gave us the perfect opportunity to take full advantage of the Spike's extraordinary characteristics."

An award-winning coaster system

Maurer has been creating innovative solutions since 1876 and has been producing roller coasters and rail-based transport systems since 1992. The Sea Stallion represents the latest milestone in the company's Spike Coaster technology, which is the world's only rider-controlled powered coaster system.

Since its first installation in 2017, the Spike family has expanded to eight installations worldwide, including the award-winning BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster on Carnival Cruise Line ships, which has been named Best Ship Feature of the Year five times in a row.

With the Sea Stallion in Qiddiya City and the world's first interactive looping coaster, “Master The Loop,” which the team presented at IAAPA 2025, the boundaries of what is possible in roller coaster construction are shifting.

Six Flags Qiddiya City marks a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia's theme park tourism. More than just an amusement park, it embodies the country's vision of becoming a global entertainment hub. Featuring 28 attractions spread across six themed zones, the park raises international standards.

Sea Stallion, the centrepiece of the Discovery Springs adventure area, show that roller coasters don't need to be the tallest or fastest to leave a lasting impression. Instead, they should evoke emotions, actively engage visitors, and tell a story.

Recently, blooloop spoke to the CEO of Maurer Rides about becoming the world’s first B Corp-certified coaster manufacturer.
