Robert Firmhofer CEO and Co-Founder Copernicus Science Centre

Robert Firmhofer is the CEO and co-founder of the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, Poland, one of the leading science museums in Europe. The Copernicus Science Centre is known for its interactive exhibits, which aim to engage visitors of all ages in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Under his leadership, the centre has become a major cultural and educational institution, attracting millions of visitors since its opening in 2010.

Firmhofer’s academic expertise is in philosophy and the history of science. He has played a significant role in promoting science communication and education in Poland, striving to make science more accessible and engaging to the public. His vision for the Copernicus Science Centre goes beyond traditional exhibits; it aims to foster curiosity and inspire critical thinking through hands-on learning and various educational programs.

As an advocate for science and education, Robert Firmhofer is also involved in numerous international collaborations and projects, promoting science literacy and innovation. He has contributed to the development of science centres and museums worldwide, sharing his experiences and insights to advance the field of science communication.

In 2023, the Copernicus Science Centre opened its educational R&D facility – the Copernican Revolution Lab – where new knowledge about learning processes is created and applied to innovative educational solutions. Researchers studying learning processes can use its specially designed spaces to observe educational sessions. Teachers, working in tandem with Copernicus staff, can test new tools and methods. Prototypes developed at the Lab, including lesson plans and educational aids, are then commercialized by businesses and promoted by the public sector and NGOs. They often address topics generally not covered in formal education curricula, like climate change or new technologies – “missing chapters” that require urgent inclusion.

From 2011 to 2013, Firmhofer was the board president of Ecsite, the European network of science centres and museums. Copernicus Science Centre will host Ecsite’s annual conference in 2025.
