Our innovation is based on a groundbreaking special effect: a true artificial quicksand pit integrated into the show L'Épée du Roi Arthur at Puy du Fou France. This spectacular device offers the audience the perfect illusion of a knight being swallowed by the ground before reappearing, creating a unique moment of magic and a key highlight in the storytelling.

A unique technical challenge

The implementation required the creation of a custom-made sand pit, designed according to the actor’s size and weight. The performer must be able to sink completely and then re-emerge smoothly and safely.

The system relies on:

  • An air injection network placed at the bottom of the tank.
  • Compressed air diffused into a specific type of sand allowing complete immersion.
  • A precise regulation of pressure (between 5 and 10 bars): the stronger the pressure, the faster the actor rises; the lower the pressure, the slower the exit.

Not all types of sand allow this effect, so an extensive six-month research and development phase was required to identify the ideal grain size and calibrate the perforation diameter. Every detail was tested with the actor in real conditions to ensure a spectacular and invisible result for the audience.

An invisible yet magical effect

The innovation also lies in its discretion: fully integrated into the medieval set, the pit remains completely invisible to the public. The effect is triggered without anyone guessing the mechanics, strengthening the narrative impact of the show. The audience believes they are witnessing a miracle: a knight swallowed by quicksand.

A world first

Never before has such an installation been designed for live entertainment. While special effects are often visual (pyrotechnics, drones, projections, water), this innovation is both sensory and physical: a set that transforms into a living trap, interacting directly with the performer.

Technical data

  • 3 tons of sand
  • 2 compressed air tanks of 3,000 L each
  • 2 compressors
  • Air pressure regulated between 5 and 10 bars

A measured investment for maximum impact

With a budget under €100,000, this device has delivered an unprecedented effect, never before seen in a live permanent show, and seamlessly integrated into the Puy du Fou France universe.

Supporting the storytelling

This quicksand pit is not just a technical achievement: it represents the climax of the narrative. It is at this moment that the audience fully plunges into the mystery and magic of the Arthurian legend. The special effect becomes a narrative tool that enhances the dramaturgy and creates an unforgettable memory.

Results

Since the show’s inauguration on April 5th, millions of spectators have witnessed this innovation. The performances (every weekend and daily during school holidays, until November 11), staged up to 8 times a day in front of 2,000 spectators per show, generate amazement, surprise, and fascination.

Partners

Puy du Fou is internationally recognised as one of the best theme parks in the world, having been named "Best Theme Park in the World" twice.

As the client for this innovation, Puy du Fou entrusted us (CRYSTAL) with the design and production of a groundbreaking special effect for the show "L'Épée du Roi Arthur".

Puy du Fou teams were in charge of the general contracting of the show including the quicksand effect. They have coordinated the whole infrastructure preparation in advance of our equipment integration.

Together, we pushed the boundaries of live entertainment.
