Sean den Bok

Chief of Education and Engagement Officer

Fresno Chaffee Zoo

Sean den Bok joined Fresno Chaffee Zoo in California in 2022 as its chief of education and engagement, bringing 18 years of experience from the Los Angeles Zoo, Santa Barbara Zoo, Seattle Aquarium, and United Way.

“Sean is a passionate advocate for amplifying community voices and ensuring that conservation efforts are both inclusive and impactful. His work exemplifies how zoos and aquariums can lead by not only protecting wildlife but also fostering strong, meaningful connections with the people they serve,” said one person who nominated Den Bok.

In his current role, Den Bok oversees conservation education, government affairs, diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI), and community partnerships. He approaches his work with a clear vision: to integrate conservation with social responsibility, ensuring that each programme and initiative reflects the needs and perspectives of the community.

“By prioritizing authentic engagement, Sean helps create pathways for people of all backgrounds to participate in and benefit from conservation efforts, thereby expanding the reach and relevance of the zoo’s mission,” they added.

Under Den Bok’s guidance, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo is expanding its role as a community resource, offering programmes that inspire environmental stewardship while addressing social and cultural challenges.

Beyond the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Den Bok is a member of the executive committee of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership (ACP). In this role, he contributes ACP’s work to unite aquariums across North America to address critical conservation challenges while embedding DEAI principles.

“Sean’s passion for conservation is grounded in his belief that protecting wildlife and habitats is inseparable from uplifting the communities who share those environments. He has consistently championed initiatives that integrate local voices into decision-making, creating conservation outcomes that are both effective and socially just,” the nominator added.

“His leadership highlights the essential role that education and partnership play in building sustainable futures for both people and wildlife.”
