SeaWorld San Diego has announced a new drone show for the summer season. Called Ocean of Dreams, the experience will debut on 22 May.

Inspired by marine life and ocean conservation, Ocean of Dreams features 600 fully synchronised drones and celebrates the beauty of the ocean.

SeaWorld San Diego's announcement comes after its application to introduce drone light shows was approved, with the park considering alternatives to fireworks due to environmental concerns.

The new 12-minute drone show will transform the night sky into a living ocean through aerial formations and lighting effects.

Guests will see depictions of animals including sea otters, sharks, dolphins, and an orca, with the show ending in an "electric neon finale in celebration of hope, wonder and ocean stewardship", SeaWorld San Diego said in press release.

"At SeaWorld, every story begins with the ocean – and this summer, we will be bringing that story to the sky in a way that inspires the next generation to protect it," said SeaWorld San Diego's park president Tyler Carter.

Innovating nighttime entertainment

"We are excited to continue to innovate what nighttime, immersive entertainment experiences can be, and proud that our park is the first and only California attraction to offer a nightly drone show for guests and the overall San Diego community to enjoy."

SeaWorld's move from fireworks to drones is in response to ongoing complaints by local residents about environmental damage and noise pollution.

Joe LaCava, president of San Diego City Council, previously praised the park for its "willingness to evolve [and] listen to residents",

He added: "SeaWorld continues to innovate, and in doing so, adapts to the desires of San Diegans while upholding our environmental values."

Ocean of Dreams will be shown nightly from 22 May through 9 August.
