SeaWorld San Diego's application to introduce drone light shows has been approved as part of a potential move away from fireworks due to environmental concerns.

Via the San Diego Union-Tribune, the California Coastal Commission voted unanimously on 15 April for SeaWorld San Diego to conduct a pilot of up to 110 nighttime drone light shows during a one-year pilot period.

The commission said in a report that in recent years, concerns have been raised "regarding the impacts fireworks may have on birds and water quality in the surrounding area".

"Therefore, SeaWorld has begun to research and implement alternative entertainment displays for its 'end of evening experience'," the report said.

Lindsey Cain, coastal programme analyst at the California Coastal Commission, said during a presentation before the project was approved (via the Times of San Diego): "SeaWorld proposes to conduct approximately 78 drone shows, with a maximum of 110 shows, over a one-year pilot period with a maximum of 1,000 drones."

In a statement, SeaWorld San Diego's park president Tyler Carter said: "SeaWorld has always focused on creating memorable moments for our guests, and we’re excited about the possibilities that drone technology brings to nighttime entertainment.

"This is a natural evolution for us as we continue to innovate and elevate the guest experience."

Drones to replace fireworks

The planned move from fireworks to drones is in response to ongoing complaints by local residents about environmental damage and noise pollution.

Joe LaCava, president of San Diego City Council, said: "For years, my constituents, neighbors, friends, and family have heard the nightly fireworks shows that SeaWorld San Diego hosts during the summer.

“And while these shows have entertained visitors, many San Diegans have voiced their desire for purer fireworks shows. And more importantly, alternatives that are less impactful to pets and the environment."

LaCava thanked SeaWorld San Diego for its "willingness to evolve [and] listen to residents", and added: "SeaWorld continues to innovate, and in doing so, adapts to the desires of San Diegans while upholding our environmental values."

Last year, SeaWorld Orlando introduced its first-ever drone light show during the Summer Spectacular event.
