Buro Happold releases green theatre book

Third book in the series covers sustainable operations for theatres

Buro Happold, a leading engineering consultancy and advisor for the culture and heritage sector, has announced the release of the final volume of The Theatre Green Book, the last book in a trilogy authored by the company in association with The Theatres Trust. Following on from the first two volumes, dealing with Sustainable Productions and Sustainable Buildings, this final third book covers Sustainable Operations.

Last month, The Theatre Green Book by Buro Happold was recognised with the Innovation Award at The Stage Award. Judges said it was “a progressive, collaborative response to the climate emergency”

Best practice in sustainability

The Theatre Green Book encompasses three volumes, each of which covers key aspects of theatre management. As a company at the leading edge of the cultural sector’s approach to sustainable recovery and sustainable operations, Buro Happold is well placed to collaborate on this project, which outlines how theatre can set the highest standards of best practice.

“We hope the Theatre Green Book will be a real turning point for sustainability in theatre,” says Paddy Dillon, Theatre Green Book coordinator.  It draws on the expertise of theatre-makers of all kinds and has united the whole theatre sector.

“Buro Happold’s expertise has been crucial in framing the guidance, shaping priorities and underpinning this shared initiative with rigorous and creative sustainability thinking.”

Andrew Wylie, partner at Buro Happold adds:

“I have been privileged to work creating new and refurbishing old theatres for many years and what became clear is that some comprehensive clear guidance could have a significant impact on the whole theatre industry’s ability to reduce the impact of their operations.

“During zoom conversations at the beginning of the pandemic, it became abundantly clear that theatre-makers were motivated to address the Climate Emergency not only in their work but the way in which they present their work and run their theatres. So by bringing Buro Happold’s experience in sustainability best practice together with Renew Theatre we were able to engage with a broad cross-section of UK theatre to produce The Theatre Green Book.”

Earlier this month, Buro Happold shared details of 10 new cultural projects which showcase the company’s world-class engineering design and consultancy expertise.
