The new project involves turning Dundee’s former gasworks into the “earthworks”

The planning application for Eden Project Dundee is due to be submitted this autumn after a public consultation process this summer.

The project involves turning Dundee’s former gasworks into the “earthworks” and a “beacon for regeneration and green tourism“, Eden said in a press release.

Eden has already worked with groups and residents in the city, and the formal public consultation process is a continuation of this collaboration.

As well as offering online feedback tools, Eden will hold three community meetings across Dundee before submitting the planning application, as follows:

  • 26 July at Arthurstone Library
  • 18 August at Douglas Community Centre
  • 13 September at the Ardler Complex

Darren Hoare, the Eden Project’s head of programme delivery, said: “We are hugely excited to be embarking on a new phase of development for Eden Project Dundee with the preparation and submission of our scheme’s planning application.

“We continue to be bowled over by the enthusiasm for this project from the people of Dundee and we’re now ready to have a full conversation with the city to embed their thoughts and aspirations for the project into the designs we submit in the planning application later this year.

“We hope that the community is as excited as we are for this opportunity to formally contribute to the development process.”

Eden has sent a proposal of application notice (PAN) to Dundee City Council, which begins the planning process.

When submitted, the planning application will detail the design of the buildings, how the project will enhance its immediate surroundings, and the visitor experience.

Dundee City Council leader John Alexander added: “This is another important milestone in a world-class project which will deliver hundreds of jobs, huge visitor numbers and tens of millions of pounds into the local economy.

“And it’s so much more than that too, with tremendous opportunities for education, inspiration and connecting our diverse communities.

“Although it will attract people from far and wide, Eden is very much for the people of Dundee. So it’s really important that citizens and communities can have their say and co-create what will be a truly incredible facility.”

Eden Project Dundee will include exhibits, performances, educational and immersive experiences, horticulture, live music, and F&B and retail spaces.

It is one of several new Eden sites in the UK and across the world, from Morecambe in Lancashire to Colombia’s Meta department.
