Meet the speakers
Innes Johnston joined Max Fordham after graduating in engineering from Cambridge University and spending a short time composing music for film. Here, he has designed mechanical and electrical systems for organisations such as Tate and the Royal Festival Hall in London.
Johnston has more than two decades of experience in the sector and leads an office of engineers and consultants who advise on comfort, carbon, and construction in the built environment.
His expertise in delivering sustainable new and refurbished buildings is combined with a deep understanding of the way physics relates to fabric and architecture.
Urban designer and director at Kay Elliott, Richard Maddock has more than 30 years of experience in architecture, masterplanning, and visitor destination design.
Maddock creates places where people, culture, and commerce come together by integrating sustainable thinking, immersive narratives, and strategic insight. As a specialist in destination masterplanning, he has led landmark projects across the Denmark, China, the US, and the UK, including the 18,000-seat Stadium for Bath, which is set in the centre of a UNESCO World Heritage City.
As the practice lead on digital transformation and responsible buildings, Maddock promotes low-carbon, high-impact design. His work includes Passivhaus, BREEAM Excellent, and adaptive reuse projects. He has also built his own home to Passivhaus standards, and so brings a firsthand understanding of comfort, performance, and long-term sustainability.
Maddock is a Design Review Panel member at Design West, a board member of Torbay Culture, and a visiting lecturer at the University of Plymouth.
Sean Mangan is a veteran design builder at Rockscapes of Canada Inc., a family-owned company renowned for creating hyper-realistic rock formations and immersive environments. He leads a team that realises bespoke projects for museums, science centres, aquariums, zoos, and premium resorts across North America.
With more than 16 years of experience, Mangan’s specialisms include fountainscapes, waterfall construction, interactive exhibit design, and creative problem-solving. His passion for combining nature, culture, and narrative has helped space award-winning projects for attractions such as Niagara Falls History Museum, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Toronto Zoo.
Mangan seeks to continually explore new ways to push the limits of design, enhance engagement, and develop memorable experiences through rock and water.
