Merlin adds new sustainable solution to single-use straws

Chessington World of Adventures, Legoland Windsor and Alton Towers have introduced edible straws made from 100 percent natural sugars.

The sustainable solution to single-use straws was announced by Aramark, one of Merlin Entertainments’ food and beverage partners.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Aramark UK in this remarkable journey towards sustainability,” said Keith Wearing, director of Edible Straws.

“Our collaboration signifies a significant step in raising awareness about eco-friendly choices and empowering individuals to positively impact the environment without compromising on taste and quality.”

The flavoured and eco-friendly straws are available in milkshakes at Dragon Delights at Chessington, Wizard’s Frozen Wonders at Legoland Windsor, and Coach House Confectionery at Alton Towers.

“By introducing Edible Straws across our sites, we are taking a significant step forward in reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable choices for our valued clients,” said Daniel Clark, Aramark’s Merlin account director.

“With Edible Straws now available at iconic Merlin, we aim to inspire visitors of all ages to contribute to a more sustainable planet.”

Sustainability at Merlin

Additionally, Merlin has been installing electric vehicle (EV) charging points at Thorpe Park, Chessington, Alton Towers, Warwick Castle and Legoland Windsor.

The company also teamed up with Coca-Cola for the second year in a row to offer VIP experiences at the former’s UK attractions in exchange for empty plastic bottles.

“Plastic waste remains a long-term environmental issue and we are committed to raising awareness and helping establish solutions to address it,” said Dare Ilori, group sustainability director at Merlin.

Merlin operates more than 140 attractions in 24 countries.
