Backyard Cinema features immersive sets, tree-lined tunnels and secret doorways.

Backyard Cinema, billed as the UK’s most magical cinema experience, is taking its immersive sets, tree-lined tunnels and secret doorways to Manchester from 21 October.

The first Backyard Cinema event outside of London is happening on the roof of Broadwick Live’s Depot Mayfield within a purpose-built indoor space.

Depot Mayfield is an entertainment and culture venue located in the city’s former Mayfield railway station. For the unique experience, Backyard Cinema is converting derelict railway tracks, platforms and the original ticket office and waiting room.

Dominic Davies, founder and CEO of Backyard Cinema, said the company is excited to offer its “alternative cinema pop-up outside of London for the very first time”.

Manchester is such a unique creative city with lots of cultural happenings and we look forward to being part of the community and offering the most magical cinema experience to all,” Davies added.

Guests watch classic films and new movies in the screening room, which features giant bean bag seating. Ushers serve seasonal cocktails and sweet treats. The venue also includes two drinking areas, street food and a stage for live music.

Cult classics and new releases

Backyard Cinema is screening new releases such as Elvis and Minions: The Rise of Gru, as well as E.T. the ExtraTerrestrial (40th Anniversary). Christmas films on offer include Elf (2003), Home Alone (1990), and Love Actually (2003).

“Backyard Cinema has built a first-rate reputation with audiences for creating immersive and exciting film experiences in landmark venues, and so it seemed like a natural partnership for Depot Mayfield,” said Simeon Aldred from Broadwick Live.

Backyard Cinema started as a passion project in its founder’s back garden and is now one of the top alternative cinema experiences in the UK.

Meanwhile, Manchester Museum is reopening in February 2023 following a £15 million transformation project.
