Dimension, a leading real-time production studio for visionary storytellers, partnered with Glastonbury’s Terminal 1 immersive space, working with the festival’s accessibility team to create a VR walkthrough of the installation so that everyone could experience it.
Terminal 1 was designed to spread the message that “No Human is Illegal”. Guests experienced a bold and moving vision across five cabins, each addressing a modern migration issue and constructed from salvaged Heathrow Terminal 1 materials.
Designed by various artists, the cabins came alive with live performers guiding visitors through an emotionally charged environment, including at the entrance, where participants had to answer a UK Government Citizenship Test question to gain entry.
To make Terminal 1 accessible for guests with mobility needs, Terminal 1 & Glastonbury Accessibility partnered with Dimension Studio to bring the experience to life via an immersive VR 180 experience complete with spatial audio.
Immersive VR experience
Anyone with an accessibility wristband was invited to enjoy the experience at the building’s entrance, where the VR walkthrough was available via Meta Quest 3 VR headsets. The digital version of the situationist artwork was being created by Dimension Live, a team within the studio that specialises in real-time content production and services for live and immersive events and experiences.
Dimension’s team was on site the day before opening, filming the full experience with the Canon R5ii and VR 180 fisheye lens in 8K at 60fps for an immersive POV of Terminal 1. The media was then processed and edited to make the digital experience available from day one.
Mark Bustard, executive producer, Live, Dimension Studio, says: “We’re hugely proud to have been invited to support Terminal 1 at this year’s festival and to provide such an important contribution in making this year’s Glastonbury Festival the most accessible ever.
“Our team at Dimension are experts in creating virtual experiences and we’re looking forward to seeing how the use of technology and the work our team has done will allow all audiences to experience Terminal 1 and understand the important message that no-one is illegal.”
Glastonbury’s access consultant, Andrew Lansbury, adds: “Dimension created the most incredible VR experience for T1. After deciding that VR was the best option for doing this, Dimension found a way to replicate the intensity and emotional experience of Terminal 1 in an experience that guides guests and gives them their own unique experience.
“Having done both at the festival; there were some ways in which the VR experience was even more intense than the physical one.”
Dimension Live was launched earlier this year, offering comprehensive and customised services that include concept development, real-time visualisation, technical design, content production, and on-site implementation.
