Oasys MassMotion and Firefly Creations discuss pedestrian experience design

News

Oasys, the sophisticated crowd-modelling product provider, recently explored practical case uses for Oasys MassMotion, an innovative guest behaviour-simulating solution used by themed entertainment designers around the globe.

The firm’s services have been highly beneficial to Firefly Creations, a designer and producer of themed visitor attractions and experiences. Having worked together on a variety of projects, the two companies discussed shared their knowledge of effective design advice and guest management tips in the latest blooloop Innovation Session, titled Enhancing Pedestrian Experience Design for Theme Parks and Attractions using Oasys MassMotion.

Immersing guests

Andrew Porter is the Creative Director for Firefly Creations, with a large part of his role focusing on telling stories that take guests to new worlds and experiences which no one ever thought was possible.

“It is really important to us and from our company point of view that we want to see our spaces built in reality. When it comes to theme park design, managing the flow of guests and people to get the attraction’s throughput is critically important to us. [Questions we ask include] how do we entertain guests while waiting in queue line spaces? What does retail after the ride look like? How can we engage guests to interact with a roller coaster without physically going on the ride itself?”

Firefly Creations use the webinar to explore these questions from a creative design perspective, explaining why Oasys MassMotion is an essential tool for the organisation.

Bringing ideas to reality

Michelle Hicks is the executive producer of Firefly Creations, working alongside Porter to bring these creative ideas to life. Hicks says that MassMotion is a very important part of that process, allowing the duo to analyse their ideas and focus on areas where extra money or efforts may need to be invested. Hicks says that this helps Firefly Creations to strike the right balance between keeping guests entertained and delivering the best value for clients.

As a chartered civil engineer from a technical background, Hicks adds: “I’m also looking at how do we make the most of our structures, how we have had to combine them with thematic assets and structures like ride and roller coaster stations, just to make the most of the product. So whilst we are very much a creative design company between Andy and myself, we’re also looking at how we can physically build ideas working alongside our teams of architects and engineers to make these attractions into a reality”

With COVID-19 hitting attendance figures and investment budgets, attractions may be tempted to hold back on new developments and offerings. Hicks says this isn’t the straightforward solution, and companies such as Firefly Creations have the answer.

“Guests are looking for more immersive experiences, there’s so much they can do in their homes with likes of virtual reality, social media, the increasing popularity of consoles, and the quality of in-home entertainment. So we have to escalate our attractions to take them above and beyond that to give guests a chance to, and the need, to come out and experience in-person entertainment.”
