Blackpool Pleasure Beach is celebrating the Big Dipper’s 100th anniversary after giving the iconic wooden coaster a makeover earlier this year.
Works on the ride included new paint to its topper, known as the onion, as well as maintenance on its track and structure.
“Although this coaster may be a veteran amongst the park, it’s a truly enjoyable ride, and we hope that its recent ‘glow-up’ will reinstate its position as a grand wooden coaster that is rich with history and a century full of memories and laughs,” said Amanda Thompson OBE, CEO of Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
Opened in 1923 at a cost of £25,000, the Big Dipper is one of the oldest rides in the world. It is on the National Heritage List for England, alongside Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Grand National coaster.
Devised and constructed by William H Strickler and John A Miller, the Big Dipper reaches a height of 65 feet and a top speed of 56 km/h. In 1934, Big Dipper was reconstructed by American engineer Charles Paige, who extended the track.
To mark the Big Dipper‘s 100th birthday, Blackpool Pleasure Beach is hosting an exclusive party today (23 August).
“A coaster as monumental as our Big Dipper deserves nothing less than the glamorous party we intend on throwing, and we want everyone else to celebrate with us,” said Thompson.
Big Dipper is one of the world’s oldest rides

Blackpool Pleasure Beach first opened in 1896. It is now home to world-class rides and attractions, including the Big One – the UK’s tallest roller coaster.
Highlights also include the UK’s only Nickelodeon Land, the award-winning Valhalla dark ride, and ICON – the UK’s first double launch coaster.
Valhalla reopened earlier this year after a £4 million refurbishment. The new ride “offers a totally new immersive experience that will leave riders eager to return”, said Thompson.
