The original Broadway-style show features puppets and a deleted song

Disney Cruise Line has shared new details about the Moana show to debut on the new Disney Treasure ship in December 2024.

Titled The Tale of Moana, the original Broadway-style show is based on Disney’s 2016 animated film Moana.

The innovative production will immerse guests in an adventure across land and sea, with a set and soundtrack inspired by Pacific Islands culture.

Disney’s first stage adaptation of Moana features puppets created by Disney Live Entertainment creative director of puppetry and articulation Jeff Conover and master puppet designer Michael Curry.

These include a huge Te Kā puppet, which will shed its fiery exterior to become island goddess Te Fiti.

Additionally, Moana and Maui will perform Warrior Face, a deleted song from the feature film. This will join songs including You’re Welcome, We Know the Way, and How Far I’ll Go.

Via a Disney blog post, The Tale of Moana will begin in modern day on the fictional island of Motunui. The spirit of Gramma Tala will serve as the show’s narrator.

During the production, Disney Cruise Line will transform the island into the open ocean with twinkling stars overhead and a giant, glowing manta ray soaring above the audience.

Disney Treasure to set sail in December

Setting sail from Port Canaveral, Florida in December, the Disney Treasure will offer experiences inspired by films such as AladdinCoco and Zootopia.

For the first time at Disney Cruise Line, the new ship will also boast several attractions based on Disney parks experiences, including the first-ever Haunted Mansion-themed bar.

Other Disney parks-themed venues on the Treasure include Skipper Society, a lounge based on the Jungle Cruise attraction, and Periscope Pub, themed to the 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the former Walt Disney World attraction.

The Treasure is a similar ship to the Disney Wish, which started sailing in 2022.
