Walt Disney World has shared a first look at Piston Peak National Park, its new Cars-themed area in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland.
The new area in Frontierland contains two new Cars attractions and is part of the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom.
Piston Peak is a fictional place inspired by national parks in America’s Rocky Mountains and the history and sights of the American frontier.
It’s described as a wilderness brimming with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers, via the Disney Parks Blog.
For the Cars area, Walt Disney Imagineers are using a style of architecture developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonise with the natural environment.
As work begins this summer, Frontierland’s Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat will close from 7 July.
Magic Kingdom’s largest-ever expansion
In addition to the Cars area, Imagineers are working beyond the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad attraction to develop the first-ever land inspired by Disney villains.
The project is named ‘Beyond Big Thunder’ because it will expand the park into a wooded area behind the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride.
Earlier this year, Walt Disney Imagineering teased the vehicles and planned experience for a new Cars ride at Magic Kingdom.
“For this Cars attraction, we need to invent a new type of ride vehicle,” said Imagineer Michael Hundgen.
“No one builds these in a factory because it has to do so much more than just carrying you from one place to another. We have to create a car that conveys a feeling when you ride in it,” he added.
