Flamingo Land, a family-run theme park in North Yorkshire, has revealed the name of its new £18m roller coaster and released footage of a recent test run.
The coaster is named ‘Sik’ after local clothing brand Sik Silk. “We are proud to announce that we are working with our great friends at Sik Silk, a well-known world fashion brand with very local links,” a spokesperson told Teeside Live.
The park’s spokesperson said Flamingo Land owner Gordon Gibb and Sik Silk owners Sam Kay, David Johnston and Barry Gill “have been friends for years and they wanted to join their two successful local brands”.
“Both companies are a true British success story with very local roots,” they added. “Sik Silk is based in Scarborough, with the three owners being born and bred there and started their company from one of their bedrooms on a Scarborough council estate.”
Roller coaster features 10 inversions
The spokesperson described the new ride, which boasts 10 inversions, as an “exciting project” and “world-class roller coaster”.
Flamingo Land’s thrill rides include Flip Flop and Cliff Hanger, while coasters include Mumbo Jumbo and Kumali. The park’s zoo attracts more visitors than ZSL London Zoo.
Flamingo Land is “one of the last of the dinosaurs”, Gibb told blooloop in 2018. “Privately-owned parks used to be the bedrock of the industry in the UK.”
“But we have to face facts,” he added. “We are now competing for the small share of the market after Merlin have had their slice.”
