Street Mission, Europe’s first dark ride inspired by Sesame Street, has launched at PortAventura World in Spain.
The new interactive ride, suitable for all ages, invites visitors to help Detective Grover complete a secret mission. Launched on April 6, the mixed media attraction features numerous animatronic characters, immersive scenery, 3D animation, video mapping and interactive gameplay. The near six-minute ride is accompanied by an 11 minute preshow.
The project, which cost €15 million, was created in collaboration with Sesame Workshop and dark ride specialist Sally Corporation. The 10 Multi Mover vehicles with on-board sound were supplied by ETF Rides, while interactive elements and show control were provided by Alterface and game design by 1050 studio.
Housed inside a newly constructed 1,300 square-metre building, Street Mission features eight scenes, seven of which are interactive. Players can shoot at over 200 targets during the ride.
A total of eight screens are used, including two curved dual screens, together with 10 projectors and 14 detection cameras. The curved screens have been used in sequences where riders fly through Count’s Castle and dive down into Oscar’s Trashcan. At the end of the ride, guests see their scores displayed on a Hall of Fame scoreboard.

The new attraction is located in the SésamoAventura area of PortAventura park. In tandem with the opening of Street Mission, PortAventura has announced an extended licensing agreement with Sesame Street through until 2031.
“SésamoAventura is an incredible area that provides memorable experiences for the whole family,” says PortAventura World managing director, Fernando Aldecoa. “With the addition of Street Mission, the first ever dark ride in Europe inspired by the iconic children’s brand, PortAventura World is strengthened as a unique family tourist destination”.

Expansion of the resort’s hotel accommodation
On June 1, PortAventura World will hold the grand opening of its new 4-star, Californian Gold Rush-themed hotel, Colorado Creek. This adjoins the resort’s existing Gold River Hotel.
PortAventura World has invested €25 million in Colorado Creek, the first zero-emission hotel at the resort. With 150 rooms, the latest addition brings the resort total to more than 2,200 rooms.
In 2019, the convention centre will also undergo a significant expansion, to increase its capacity and hold and large-scale events.
Elsewhere, PortAventura World is carrying out substantial renovations on Hotel PortAventura, which are scheduled for completion at the end of May and represent an investment of €12 million.
In October, PortAventura World announced that it plans to eliminate plastics in the resort by 2020.
