Rockscapes of Canada, a leading creator of themed rockwork for the attractions industry, has announced the successful completion of its extensive artificial rockwork on AlpenFury, the record-breaking new coaster at Canada’s Wonderland.
AlpenFury is a high-thrill, multi-launch alpine-themed roller coaster that features a unique underground launch sequence and dynamic transitions through mountainous terrain. Rockscapes of Canada was contracted to deliver all artificial rock theming integrated into Wonder Mountain and the surrounding areas of the new ride.
The project scope involved rebuilding and repairing sections of Wonder Mountain to accommodate new structural changes, while ensuring seamless aesthetic continuity with the original mountain façade.
The team was also responsible for constructing several new artificial caves and tunnels, including the underground tunnel where the coaster launches through at high speed, surrounded by jagged spires of sculpted rock designed to amplify the thrill of the launch. Additionally, Rockscapes of Canada created the dramatic rock entryway into the underground tunnel, providing riders with an immersive sensation of crashing through the heart of the mountain.
A continuing partnership
This was a high-intensity, multi-phase build spanning a year, requiring precision, adaptability, and collaboration with ride engineering and show design teams. The artificial rock and hand-sculpted features blend storytelling with durability, safety, and weather resistance, capable of withstanding Ontario’s seasonal extremes.
This project continues the firm’s partnership with Canada’s Wonderland and Cedar Fair, establishing Rockscapes of Canada as a top partner for major themed attractions across North America. Its work on AlpenFury highlights its expertise in large-scale artificial rock design and engineering, especially in complex, guest-interactive environments that require realism, strength, and theatricality.
As the provider and manufacturer of all artificial rock elements for the AlpenFury project, the Rockscapes of Canada in-house team oversaw the entire process—from developing the initial concept and integrating it with ride infrastructure, to fabrication, sculpting, and applying the final finishes onsite.
The work included custom rock fabrication, on-site hand sculpting for key areas, collaboration with engineers to meet safety standards, and efficient installation during park operations. The firm delivered a scalable, reliable rock system integrated into Wonder Mountain, demonstrating its ability to create large-scale themed environments in high-profile locations.
AlpenFury
AlpenFury from Premier Rides is a groundbreaking roller coaster at Canada’s Wonderland, featuring dual launches—including an underground tunnel with lighting effects—reaching speeds over 106 km/h.
Built through Wonder Mountain, it’s inspired by the European Alps, with over 3,200 feet of track, a 110° overbanked turn, and immersive queue scenery. It represents a significant investment, solidifying the park’s status as a top thrill destination.
Feedback from guests and park enthusiasts has been positive, with one digital creator saying: “The craftsmanship is insane! So thankful home park has this talent available nearby to deliver this level of theming.” Another added: “The rockwork looks so good! Y’all did such a fantastic job on everything, and it’s so awesome to see the park collaborate with such a talented Canadian team.”
Other comments included: “Every aspect of the mountain, the footings, the tunnel just looks incredible! Absolutely gorgeous! You all should be so proud…It’s one heck of a ride.”
Sean Mangan, operator, builder and artist at Rockscapes of Canada, says:
‘“Alpen Fury challenged us in all the right ways. Any time a new ride carves through an existing mountain, the goal is to make it look like it was always meant to be there. That takes more than skill — it takes vision, speed, and a team that doesn’t flinch under pressure.
“I’m proud of how our crew brought the story of this mountain to life, seamlessly blending old and new to deliver an immersive experience from launch tunnel to final turn.”
Padraic Mangan, rock artist and VP of operations at Rockscapes of Canada, adds:
“Just so incredibly proud of our part in bringing this incredible ride to Wonderland. What a wonderful place to work with just an incredible staff and a huge vision for what’s possible. They are absolutely testing the limits with the Alpenfury ride, and we were just happy to be a part of that, whether it was the new entrance or patching holes and helping along with the ride.
“What a great time, I can’t wait to see everyone enjoy it.”
Earlier this year, Rockscapes of Canada celebrated the opening of the London Children’s Museum’s new home at 100 Kellogg Lane in London, Ontario, Canada. The company worked on several of the exhibits inside the new building.
