New attraction blurs the lines between simulation and reality

SeaWorld Orlando has set an opening date for Expedition Odyssey, a new Arctic immersive experience using cutting-edge ride technology.

Expedition Odyssey, a family-friendly offering at SeaWorld Orlando, opens to the public on 1 May.

A unique attraction, it combines dynamic motion, state-of-the-art visuals, and real-world footage of Arctic wildlife to blur the lines between simulation and reality.

Riders will enjoy an exhilarating journey through glaciers, tundra and the icy depths of the Arctic Ocean.

Custom-shot footage will immerse guests in remote Arctic locations as they meet animals like polar bears, orcas, beluga whales, seals and walruses.

Jon Peterson, park president of SeaWorld Orlando, described Expedition Odyssey as “an adventure unlike anything our guests have experienced before, combining thrilling, immersive storytelling with powerful, real-world animal connections”.

“The newest addition to our park is unlike anything we have ever done before and brings to life the wonder of the Artic in a way only SeaWorld can do,” he said.

Meet Arctic wildlife on Expedition Odyssey

As guests exit the new attraction, they will meet real Arctic animals, including Uki – an orphaned Pacific walrus calf rescued in Alaska.

Deemed non-releasable, Uki arrived at SeaWorld Orlando in September and since then has been nurtured and supported by animal care specialists.

Last year, SeaWorld Orlando opened its new Penguin Trek family launch coaster.

Located in the new Antarctica realm, Penguin Trek boasts an indoor and outdoor track, and snowmobile-style ride cars.

In more news for SeaWorld, operator United Parks & Resorts has revealed it will introduce “globally recognized IP” to its theme parks, but its hotel plans are delayed.

“We are in discussions with various partners to bring globally recognized IP to our parks via new rides, attractions and/or exciting activations,” said Marc Swanson, CEO of United Parks & Resorts, during an earnings in February.
