Shanghai Disney Resort is opening an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience in its Disneytown shopping, dining and entertainment district on 10 September.

Developed by SoReal, a leading VR company in China, SoReal VR SuperSpace will be the first flagship store in Shanghai. The two-storey space offers VR experiences on its first floor and an immersive VR walkthrough experience on the second floor.

Joe Schott, president and general manager at Shanghai Disney, said the resort is looking for “new and innovative ways to provide an exceptional guest experience”.

“We are delighted to see SoReal introduce their creative new experience leveraging their cutting-edge technology, and we believe this new addition will further elevate the overall entertainment experience for our guests visiting Disneytown,” Schott added.

SoReal VR SuperSpace is inspired by Journey to the West, a Chinese novel published in the 16th century. The walkthrough experience brings to life the Monkey King, a mythical figure in Journey to the West.

“With classic characters from Journey to the West, guests of all ages will be able to explore a fun and thrilling adventure where they conquer missions while being immersed in timeless tales,” according to a press release.

Michael Qi, co-founder and CEO of Sky Limited Entertainment, said the team has been “working tirelessly over the past year to design and create this exciting new theme, tailored content, and unique experiences”.

“SoReal shares the same commitment as Shanghai Disney Resort does to creative, novel and immersive experiences,” Qi added.

“We hope that guests will create magical memories as they experience our new SoReal VR SuperSpace together.”

Last month, Shanghai Disneyland launched an official flagship store on Tmall.
