Thunderbolt coaster featuring vertical lift and inversions now open at OCT-operated park

Zamperla, a leading ride manufacturer, has provided insight into one of its latest thrill rollercoasters, which has opened at Yangzhou Fancy City. Redefining the park’s skyline with its vertical lift, Canal Peak features a near-vertical drop.

The smoothness of this new ride is the result of an almost decade-long investment by Zamperla for its roller coaster division. The company has created one of the largest internal calculations teams in Italy, hiring skilled engineers to improve its track fabrication capabilities.

Roller coaster sales and marketing director Adam Sandy says: “Our engineering team did a fantastic job creating a fun layout with the available space. The ride pacing is fantastic, the elements just hit one after another. This design is a great reflection of the women and men that make up the engineers and fabricators as part of the Zamperla team.”

Top speeds of 53 mph

One of Zamperla’s Thunderbolt 568 models, the 30.5 meter-tall coaster is over half a kilometre long, reaching a top speed of 85 km/h (53 mph). The firm has also supplied three, nine-passenger trains.

Roller coaster division director Alberto Ferri says:

“We are thrilled because this project is a great reflection of the improvements our team made in people and technology. The accelerometer data shows that this is one of the best Zamperla coasters we have manufactured and it is thrilling, from the vertical lift to the five inversions. The experience this installation delivers lays the groundwork for the next generation of Zamperla coasters.”

Canal Peak’s bright orange track stands out against the urban backdrop, topping last year’s collection of Chinese coasters that have attracted attention from enthusiasts and the public for the past few decades.

Catering for both audiences, Zamperla’s design team laboured to ensure that locals, as well as roller coaster fans, would appreciate the unique layout. The coaster’s giant Cobra Roller element forms a notable statement piece on one end of the coaster.

Sales & operation manager for China & Korea Region, Davide Donnadello adds:

“OCT has been a fantastic partner for Zamperla in China for a long time. This was one of our largest projects together and we are excited about how well it turned out. We look forward to future installations together and working with OCT to deliver thrilling attractions all over the country.”

Last month it was announced that Luna Park, situated at Coney Island, New York, would expand with two new attractions named after members of the Zamperla family.
