The patent holder, amusement designer and manufacturer of solar powered carousels since 1989, and creator of an entire solar amusement parc, Peter Petz now presents the world’s largest solar carousel in Athens, Greece.
This nostalgic carousel dates back to the fictitious year of 1907. With a diameter and height of 7 meters, it can hold 52 passengers on sixteen moving horses, four rotating balloon thrillers and additional seating for a great “steam carousel” ride. . around the chimney of a standing steam engine as centre pole. It is magnificently decorated and illuminated.
Historically the Paris World’s Fair 1886 presented a spectacular steam engine, powered by a parabolic sun mirror, generating steam in the engines boiler, Historlically the three parabolic sun mirrors at top of the Petz steam ride are reminiscences to this world exhibition event.
Actually, the Athena Solar Carousel power supply, comes from twelve mono-crystalline photopholtaic collector panels each with 180 W , positioned as carousel canopy. They generate the electric power for the computerized DC operation of electric gear box motors and illumination This allows self-sufficient operation by solar energy all year round.. Generated “plus energy”, can be delivered into the public electric net.
Peter Petz adds, “ This efficient use of the state-of the-art technical resources and over 25 years of experience with sustainable energy and solar powered rides, its related development and construction techniques and the resultant optimal performance makes the realization of even larger projects in the future possible for all kind of amusement rides.”
The carousel was financed and is operated by the Greek Event Management company MMP in the Athens zoo and plays a pioneering role in f Green Solutions for the amusement industry, much in line with one of the major topic of this years TILE Conference in London: “Sustainable Design and Technologies in Leasure and Entertainment” in March of 2009.
