Mayor Coleman Announces, “The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is Changing Its Name”

News

Big changes are nothing new for the world-famous Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. First came the creation of a brand new water park, Zoombezi Bay. Then a new ride area, Jungle Jack’s landing. And most recently, the groundbreaking for Polar Frontier, a 13-acre exhibit that will bring polar bears back to Columbus. But perhaps the most surprising change of all is this: After81 years, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is changing its name.

For two weekends in October, anyway.

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman even made it official; proclaiming that on October 17-19 and 24-26 the Columbus Zoo will change its name to "The Gotham City Zoo and Aquarium." The reason for the name change? Because on those two weekends, the Columbus Zoo will be home to Gotham City’s most famous resident, Batman.

The Dark Knight himself will be at the Zoo as part of the annual "Boo at the Zoo" promotion. Gotham City’s crime-fighting legend will star in special shows over the two weekends.

"It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Batman in person, " said Jeffrey Swanagan, the Zoo’s Executive Director. "When I saw the new Batman movie, I knew it would be exciting to have this new Batman, The Dark Knight, at our zoo. It’s a special Halloween treat for families." Swanagan added with a smile, "Of course, all the bats at the Zoo are looking forward to his visit. But the penguins, well, they’re a bit nervous."

In addition to Batman’s shows and appearances, Zoo visitors will enjoy other Halloween-related activities too, including the famous pumpkin smash, treat stations, a haunted train ride, storytelling and more.

"As the advertising agency for the Columbus Zoo, we’ve had lots of great opportunities to come up with unique promotions, " said Ron Foth, Sr., of Ron Foth Advertising. "Working with Batman, and actually changing the Zoo’s name for two weeks, ranks right up there."

"I encourage everyone to come out, " Swanagan added. "Because after these two weekends it’ll be back to ‘The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’ faster than the Batmobile itself."

Regular admission rates apply for Boo at the Zoo. The events are free for Zoo members, and just another reason to have a Zoo membership. For a full schedule of events go to columbuszoo.org
