Alterface, a leader in interactive technology, has collaborated with Sally Dark Rides and Daniels Wood Land (DWL) to develop Treasure Hunt: The Ride.
The interactive dark ride opened on 22 July in Monterey, California. Sally Dark Rides and DWL appointed Alterface to deliver the multimedia interactivity and gameplay that are part of the ride’s original plot in order to bring the stunning new experience to life.
Treasure Hunt: The Ride, located on Cannery Row in Monterey, California, is a standalone ride. However, it offers an immersive experience, quality of the environment, and innovative technology found in destination theme parks.
Visitors join a present-day pirate quest to find Captain Bouchard’s lost loot. The interactive features of the Treasure Hunt feature actual targets, as well as props, characters, and real-time interactive media. Several scenes include enormous screens, and projection mapping brings numerous set pieces to life. Players can interact with something everywhere they go.
Stephane Battaille, CEO of Alterface, says: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to
collaborate with Sally Dark Rides and Daniels Wood Land on this project. Our team worked hard to help create an interactive experience that immerses guests in the world of pirates and treasure hunting. We believe this unforgettable adventure, which combines cutting-edge technology with immersive theming and interactive gameplay, will thrill and delight guests of all ages.”
Jeff Moser, general manager for Treasure Hunt at Daniels Wood Land, comments: “I’ve always been very confident in the theming aspects of the ride because that is where our company specializes. Any concerns about how the digital targeting would work were quickly squashed by the team of Francois, Brice and Nicolas at Alterface. They were extremely knowledgeable about the equipment, very diligent in their work, and unquestionably played a central role in the project’s success!”
Maximising points
The ride immerses visitors in a world of pirates and treasure hunters. To create a memorable experience, the attraction mixes innovative technology with immersive theming and interactive gameplay.
New features include a unique power-up token that can be purchased by visitors to boost their ability to collect points. A new trigger function also makes collecting treasure quicker, easier, and more competitive.
“We really enjoy working with the Alterface team, ” Rich Hill, chief creative officer with Sally Dark Rides, adds. “They have provided interactive systems for almost a dozen of our dark rides to date. The interactive system they created over the years functions well and thoroughly engages guests on our dark rides. Alterface continues to push the boundaries of interactive gameplay and introduce new technology and elements with each new project.”
Brice Ichallal, software engineer at Alterface, says: “This ride is the perfect blend of Sally’s dark ride storytelling and media-based attractions, Daniels Wood Land’s expertise with highly themed, interactive environments, and Alterface’s extensive experience in interactive technology. Treasure Hunt: The Ride is an adventure people will want to play again and again.”
Other partners in the project were Gosetto (track-based ride system), Pure Imagination Studios (gameplay and media), TechniLux (lighting) and Extreme Engineering (opening elevator scene).
Alterface revealed three themes for its award-winning dark ride experience Action League last summer, including pirates, robots, and mutant plants.
