'A Journey of Light' with Diriyah Company

Let's set the scene: You've exited Tottenham Court Road Station. Around 40K visitors pass through here every day. Most are on their way somewhere else. But the rush gives way to the smell of oud, and the low pulse of a drumbeat can be felt in your chest. You're drawn in, and sit on a rug beneath a starry sky, wrapped in the warmth of glowing light. You see Ardha dancers moving in sync to the drumbeat, and before you know it, you're on your feet, clapping along. You have your name written in Arabic calligraphy, watching the craft and waiting for the ink to settle. Behind, you can hear coffee being poured the traditional way, high above the cup so it aerates as it falls. The aroma fills the air, and you can't wait to try it. Wait — are we still in central London?

'A Journey of Light' was an experience that brought the history, culture and signature hospitality of Saudi Arabia into the middle of one of the world's busiest entertainment districts. Visitors walked into Diriyah, the birthplace of Saudi Arabia.

Diriyah 'A Journey of Light' responses

Diriyah Company took over the entire Outernet London district for 6 days, across 5 immersive spaces. The crowning glory; the Now Building, a four-storey-high (14.5m), 3mm pixel-pitch, 16k+ resolution LED canvas, wrapping over 1,200 sqm of screen into a continuous 360-degree environment. It's one of the largest immersive canvases of its kind in the world, and the first time it has been used to build a narrative cultural destination experience at this scale.

The innovation here is not a single factor. It's the combination of many at a scale and fidelity that hasn't been attempted before. Over 200 speakers delivered spatial audio, synced frame-for-frame to the visuals; an integrated system released custom scents at precise narrative beats; and the visuals themselves were a hybrid of pre-rendered and real-time Unreal Engine content, allowing light, shadow and atmosphere to shift from dawn to noon to night.

A recent investment in our render farm capacity enabled us to deliver 9 individual pieces of digital content 3x faster at full resolution, which was critical to achieving the level of detail and realism on a project of this scale and timeline. Outernet is a technology-led, technology-enabled venue, but every piece of hardware existed to tell the story and create a new template for how technology-led venues can tell destination stories.

Hafawah

At the heart of the experience was a specifically Saudi cultural spirit: Hafawah. A warmth and generosity so deeply ingrained it feels entirely natural. That spirit was built into every sensory layer: coffee poured by hand in the traditional style, calligraphy personalised to each guest, dancers performing live, inviting the crowd to join. Generosity and a warm welcome were woven into the detail, not performative.

Our team travelled to Diriyah to study the unique characteristics of the city and used that research to create bespoke digital worlds: a bustling heritage market, striking architecture, an opera house, and the energy of a live arena. Each was lit and shaded with hyper-realistic precision, shadows lengthening and tones shifting from gold at dusk to deep blue by night, so a visit carried the shape of a day lived in Diriyah. Synchronised audio was curated to enhance the immersion, making visitors feel part of the world, rather than watching it.

To date, the experience has generated 6.7M in PR reach, and over 11K likes on Instagram via @visitdiriyah's channel, with the proof of concept in the comments: @bestof_casablanca "The vibrant Colors instantly my caught my eye, I walked in out of curiosity and it just clicked! Absolutely loved the creativity and storytelling behind the whole setup." A snippet of how Diriyah's story extended far beyond the physical footprint of The Outernet.

Diriyah at Outernet with Alex Apthorpe

A Journey of Light used the fusion of screen, sound, scent, live performance and physical space to make an entire destination halfway across the world momentarily, convincingly present to a scale and audience few cultural bodies could otherwise reach. It proved that world-class cultural storytelling no longer requires visitors to travel to the source.
