Dublin Zoo

Andrew Mooney is a conservation professional at Dublin Zoo whose work combines conservation science, policy, research and community engagement.

He strongly advocates for the evolving role of modern zoos, championing a vision in which they operate as active conservation organisations, using their expertise, resources, and public reach to protect biodiversity locally and globally.

The sector recognised his contribution in 2025, when he received BIAZA’s prestigious Rising Star Award for his leadership in conservation science, policy and community engagement.

He was also named EAZA’s Proud Zoo Person, recognising his commitment to ex situ conservation programmes and his collaborative approach across the European zoo community.

As vice chair of the BIAZA Research Committee, Mooney plays an important role in supporting emerging researchers, mentoring young professionals and encouraging collaborative research projects across institutions. Colleagues describe him as a “charismatic and kind leader”, reflecting his commitment to helping others develop their skills and build careers in conservation.

AMooney is also a passionate advocate for making conservation more accessible and inclusive. He champions LGBTQ+ inclusion and creates opportunities for young people entering the field, helping ensure the next generation of conservation professionals reflects a broader range of backgrounds and experiences.

Through his leadership, collaborative spirit, and investment in others, he is strengthening the conservation community and shaping a more inclusive, science-led future for zoos.
